11-tinySymptoms of Addiction:

Addiction involving alcohol, nicotine and other drugs is defined as having 2 or more of the following symptoms within a 12 month period.

  • Often taking more of the substance for a longer period than intended
  • Craving the substance
  • Ongoing desire or unsuccessful efforts to reduce use or stop
  • Developing tolerance (feeling less effects from the substance with continued use)
  • Failing to fulfill obligations needs at school, work, or home as a result of continued use
  • Continued use despite ongoing social or relationship problems caused or worsened by use
  • Giving up or reducing social, recreational or occupational activities because of use
  • Repeated use in physically dangerous situations
  • Continued use despite ongoing physical or mental health problems caused or worsened by use
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms after reducing use ( symptoms vary by substance and withdrawal does not occur with all substances, e.g inhalants or hallucinogens)
