Group Psychotherapy

1-tinyI have been practicing group psychotherapy since 1982 and I am a sensitive and experienced group psychotherapist.

I have facilitated varied and various types of psycho-therapeutic groups. These have included both inpatient and outpatient groups, some of which incorporated the 12 Step paradigm for recovery groups. The groups that i have facilitated have ranged from woman’s groups focusing on relational health and spirituality; psycho-educational groups, groups focusing on bereavement; interactional groups; groups for substance abuse and process addictions and bi-monthly community groups for chronic psychiatric illnesses which included psycho-education and the maintenance of functioning

The in-patient group work that I have been involved in, in residential rehabilitative settings and psychiatric settings, includes a variation of psycho-therapeutic groups ranging from didactic psycho-education, to interactional groups, to recovery groups, bereavement groups, eating disorder groups to goal-oriented groups etc.

The goals and advantages of psycho-therapeutic groups occupy a wide spectrum and are varied. It hinges on the goals or focus area of the group.

It includes:

  • Education and the restoration of functioning
  • Symptom relief and intrapersonal changes,
  • A cohesive and supportive experience with a sense of belonging
  • Mutual identification, developing trusting relationships and acceptance
  • Testing new behaviours, behavioural changes and reality testing
  • Understanding and correcting interpersonal distortions
  • Installation of hope…. changes is possible.
  • Cost-effective

Psycho-therapeutic groups that I offer usually meet on a weekly basis, consist of 6 – 8 members and have a specific goal and focus. It is also time bound  meaning that the group will run its course, for example, over a 12 week period and the length of the group is usually 90 minutes. Group therapy is  often combined with individual therapy to ensure maximum effectiveness.
