Work experience

My work experience includes:

Community Psychiatric Nursing: 1990 – 1994

With the decentralization of Valkenberg Hospital, in the late 80’s and early 90’s, both acute and chronically ill patients were discharged from the state hospital into the community. I was involved in community psychiatric work which was diverse, exciting and innovative.

It included:

  • Creating and managing satellite outpatient psychiatric clinics for individuals who suffered from both acute and chronic psychiatric disorders
    and co-occurring illnesses;
  • Managing chronic psychiatric patient care and monitoring mental health and compliance on medication;
    Co-ordination of 3 monthly appointments with the psychiatrist, at various clinics, as well as astute clinical assessment and decision making
    about urgent psychiatric contact;
  • Interactive communication, between the patient and their families or ‘involved other’, and between an array of multidisciplinary teams and members;
  • Networking and communication between various departments, organizations and other professionals in order to provide qualitative and ongoing
    psychiatric care.
